About
If you're looking for art, storytelling, history, and DIY urban gardening ideas that you can deploy around your neighborhood and bond with your neighbors around, this is the zine for you: Urban Forest Mail is a 12-edition monthly zine designed, illustrated, and written by me, a sociologist, artist, and gardener who grew up in Houston, Texas but moved to Baltimore, Maryland as soon as I could.
Each edition mails out the 1st of every month!
It's playful, interactive, and encourages building community no matter where you live!
CONTENTS:
Each 12-page zine edition has five sections:
Cut-out art: one illustration, botanically themed per edition; every illustration is based on a personal story, either from my neighborhood or community-sourced stories from other neighborhoods.
Storytelling: telling the story that inspired the illustration about mine (& your) efforts to change the neighborhood for the better
Urban environmental history: I’ll breakdown the race and class politics of plants & the city in visuals, covering topics such as the link between redlining and tree canopies, soil inequality, urban infrastructure, and more
DIY steps to greening your neighborhood: growing flowers in the public right-of-way of my city block - and my quest to get more street trees planted - transformed my relationship with my neighborhood & neighbors. My dream is for every city block to have the tools to do the same. So I’m sharing my countless notes on ideas to get started with making your neighborhood space greener
Interactive prompts: getting you outside to observe your neighborhood and collaborate with your neighbors, write-in, and share back with me, if you like! And get a qr code link to additional resources on a dedicated website page.
